Baseball Umpires' Guidebook
Volumes 1, II and III

Instructional Series published by Referee Publications

During the 1993 baseball season Referee Publications, the official publication and magazine of the National Association of Sports Officials, embarked on a project to create a new series of baseball instruction books. These books were designed to be quality references for the working umpire. Each book contains extensive notes and provides many. many hours of detailed study.

Volume I - Proper Positioning (BBUGV1 - $14.95 US) appeared early in 1994. It was quickly recognized as the most comprehensive book on umpire positioning available. The diagrams are very complete and take you through casebook studies of plays including: where to start each play, where to go when the ball is hit, what to watch for and why. These are covered in depth from the perspective of two-man coverage. In total there are over 60 case situations with complete breakdowns for each umpire. The essentials of plate and base mechanics are dealt with. In addition to the studies there are reviews, questions and quiz material to ensure your comprehension of the material. Mark R. Ambrosius is the author, edited by Scott Ehret (spiral bound, soft cover, w/3 hole punch, 166 pages)

Volume II - Communications and Mechanics (BBUGV2 - $14.95 US) presents the where, what and why of umpiring better than any other material currently available. In each of the over 60 situations where the umpire is supposed to go, what actions have to be undertaken to effectively cover the action in a two-man coverage situation, and why taking care of the little details is important are presented with diagrams and full explanations. Mark R. Ambrosius is the author, edited by Scott Ehret (spiral bound, soft cover w/3 hole punch, 169 pages)

Volume III - Three & Four Man Mechanics (BBUGV3 - $14.95 US) has to be the most thorough collection of baseball officiating mechanics available. Beginning with a review of onfield mechanics and ending with a discussion of six man umpire responsibilities the book uses the format established in volumes I & II taking its case studies into a step-by-step discussion of each umpire's responsibilities. The fifty-four case studies examine the role and responsibility of each umpire and present reviews and quizzes to assist with comprehending the material. It is important to note that this book requires knowledge developed in Volumes 1 and II, or considerable experience, and would be of limited value without this background. Scott Ehret is the author. (spiral bound, soft cover, w/3 hole punch, 211 pages)

Who needs these instructional books? Any official, serious on learning, reviewing or staying on top of the game would appreciate the materials contained in these volumes. Certainly any instructor would benefit from the knowledge and presentation format. These books are not easy reading, they are not a "simple" do-this book. Each case study forces you to think through the play, to comprehend the action and prepare your reactions and movements accordingly. The material will challenge very experienced umpires and provide concrete information for developing officials.

The manuals are $14.95 (US) each. A custom binder is available for $7.95 (us). All three manuals and the binder are available for $49.95 (us). NASO members receive a membership discount when they purchase these books.

- a four out of plate rating! (5/5)
